O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. Models appeared in commercials for a time before relocating to Los Angeles. The career path O'Grady started her career as a the model of Montgomery Ward, and well having a number of commercials. She first appeared on screen in 1988 in the romantic comedy She's Having a Baby. She was then offered the main character in ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. The other appearances she made on the guest list included programs for TV as well as independent films, among many others. Her first big role was that of Donna Abandando on the ABC Police series NYPD Blue. O'Grady played the big-haired team secretary between 1993 and 1996, and for each season, she received the Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. With her fellow cast members, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award, for Outstanding Performance of an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
